Collections Down in 2009?  What's the Simplest, Quickest Way to Improve Collections in 2010?

Updated:  5:00 p.m. ET, Fri., February 12, 2010

Providers everywhere seem to be saying the same thing – “In 2009, my collections went down 10%,” or “In 2009, my collections went down 30%.”  In some cases, we’ve heard providers reporting drops in collections rates of 40%-50%!!!

One of the simplest, quickest way to improve collections IMMEDIATELY is to fix a process that is broken in many practices – a process that many providers don’t even know is broken.  The process relates to your assignment & lien document and protocol.

Recently, Keith Pendleton, JD (ProviderLAW) held a 2-part webinar series on the topics of assignments and liens.  These two webinars were recorded and are available for viewing free of charge.

If you are looking to improve reimbursements and collections in 2010, you owe it to yourself to view these unprecedented programs.

$44,000 in Stimulus Money?  An EHR Stimulus Advisory

Updated:  11:30 a.m. ET, Wed., February 17, 2010

As a health care provider, have you heard that you can potentially qualify for up $44,000 in federal stimulus money for adopting a Certified Electronic Health Record (EHR) system?  If you have heard this, take note -- the regulations which define how you get the $44,000 are over 600 pages long.  What's more, a number of significant factors set forth in these regulations may totally exclude you from receiving any money at all.

Here's a few quotes from various industry sources you may wish to consider:

Quote from Medicfusion EMR "...[T]he big elephant in the room -- or in our email boxes -- is the elusive promise of $44,000 in stimulus funds from the feds for implementing the right software in the right way.  Don't bank on it.  Promises that the federal government will pay you $44,000 to buy an EMR are simply not true. And promises that an EMR or EHR 'will be certified' are meaningless. Why? Because certification is useless to you unless you 'meaningfully use' all of the modules defined by the feds." (emphasis added)

Quote from Practice Fusion The web site of Practice Fusion puts it this way:  “The certification requires physicians to obtain ‘Certified EHR technology,’ which is a new term in the industry. This ‘Certified EHR technology’ can be made up of either a single Certified EHR (which satisfied all 25 criteria sets), or a combination of multiple Certified EHR Modules (which can satisfy one or several criteria sets). CCHIT has proposed doing physician site certification, in order to verify that all the IT ‘pieces’ (Modules) that a practice implements all work together, and result in a full-fledged ‘Certified EHR technology....’” (emphasis added)

Quote from Platinum System.  The web site of Platinum System puts it this way:  "In order to be eligible for the $44,000.00 stimulus package, doctors will have to meet 25 important 'Meaningful use' objectives.  Doctors will have to meet them all or they will not receive any Stimulus incentive dollar[s]....   The 'Meaningful Use Guidelines' are a set of 25 objectives all doctors, including chiropractors, will have to fulfill to be eligible. 24 are not enough. To be eligible, doctors will need to meet the entire 25 objectives."  Platinum's web site concludes:  "[W]e believe the vast majority of chiropractors could not meet 'Meaningful Use' guid[e]lines if they wish to keep practicing the same way they presently do...."  (emphasis added)

Recently, ProviderLAW Corporation published a series of simple tools -- tools which will make it much easier for you to assess the likelihood of receiving EHR stimulus dollars.  Here they are:
